Writers in the Schools
Creative Writing Camp: Sci Fi/Fantasy, 7-9th Grade - Summer 2014 & Summer 2015 - Co-taught a two-week writing camp with a focus on Science Fiction and Fantasy writing. Emphasized elements of writing craft in fiction and poetry, including setting, characterization, plot and conflict, figurative language, beginnings, rhyme scheme, poetry forms, as well as skills in revision and peer review. Culminated in a printed anthology of student work and a public reading by the students.
WITS Placement: Private Elementary School, 5th Grade - 2015 - Focus on exploration of literary genres poetry, fiction, nonfiction and play writing, with an emphasis on close reading and revision processes. Culminated in a printed class anthology.
WITS Placement: Public Elementary School, 4th Grade - 2014-2015 - Focus on fluency in literary elements such as simile, hyperbole, and active verbs as well as poetry and prose forms, including odes, free verse, expository essays and narratives. Culminated in a printed class anthology.
WITS Placement: Arts Elementary School, 3rd Grade - 2013-2014 - Focus on fiction and poetry elements, the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, publishing), writing fluency. Culminated in a printed class anthology.
WITS Placement: Early College High School, 11th Grade - Fall 2012 - Focus on craft elements in nonfiction to develop, revise, and edit a personal narrative essay. Development of a collection of student non-fiction stories about a positive educational experience.

Rhetoric and Composition
ENGL 211 - Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences: The Rhetoric of Space Travel
The second component of composition at NMSU continues the work of ENGL 111 in teaching critical thinking, reading, writing, and research, specifically for the humanities and social sciences. Through the lens of space travel, students focus on developing analytical arguments about political and speculative texts, both visual and written.
ENGL 111 - Rhetoric and Composition
In the first component of composition at NMSU, students develop knowledge and sound practices in rhetorical analysis, academic writing and research. Students develop a sustained, research-intensive written argument over the course of the semester that demonstrates written focus, organization, source incorporation, citation, proofreading, consideration of counter-arguments, cohesion, and attention to a specific audience.
Creative Writing
ENGL 304 - Creative Writing: Prose
This junior-level creative writing course focuses on introducing students to the academic study and writing of fiction. In this iteration of the course, students focus on the very short form to develop fluency in identifying, discussing, and writing with and about elements of craft and art in the short story. The course also introduces students to the practices and etiquette of the workshop format through small-group workshops and rigorous responses and participation by the instructor.
ENGL 220 - Intro to Creative Writing
This introductory creative writing course introduces students to reading and writing in three genres: poetry, nonfiction, and fiction. The focus of the course is to begin to identify, discuss, and use some of the many choices in craft that writers make in these three genres as well as introduce students to a variety of styles and sub-genres in each of the three focus areas.

NMSU Writing Center Consultant, August 2010-May 2011. Assisted students in one-on-one appointments to enhance and develop writing skills and practices at all stages of the writing process on a variety of writing projects. Served students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, including second-language learners.
